On Tuesday, February 14, 2023, Charity's Children Project issued a press statement challenging Wright State University's Black History research and data as it relates to Dayton, Ohio's first black neighborhood. On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, Wright State University held a public lecture entitled “Finding Africa: Using Archival Data to Recover Dayton’s First Black Neighborhood” at the Dunbar Library. The research conducted was led by Drs. Geoffrey R. Owens and Marlese Durr of the School of Social Sciences and International Studies Department. The following video statement is from Founder Patricia Smith Griffin and was issued to the students of Wright State University who are studying under Dr. Owens, many of whom are in disagreement with Owens' methodology and research. This statement was created to show solidarity and support.
